Where's my serial number?
- Late 1960s and later: usually on a small plate on the dashboard, visible through the windshield on the driver's side.
- Earlier cars: it varies by make and year. Common places are the driver's door pillar or hinge post, the steering column, the firewall, or near the glove box. Each make's page lists what our sources say.
- Paperwork: your title and registration also show it.
Example: 11234567 (an example Buick serial).
Years we cover
1946-1974, 1976-1980. Not covered yet: 1975.
What a Buick serial looks like, by year
Each example below is split into numbered groups of characters, with what each group means. Example numbers show the layout; they are not a specific car.
1946-1953
Looks like 11234567 (8 characters)
| 1 Assembly plant | 1: Flint, Michigan [TB-APP2] |
| 2 Sequential production number | 1234567 [TB-APP2] |
- This format is digits only, and many makers used plain numeric serials in these years. A match here does not by itself show the car is this make; check the make on the car and its paperwork.
TB-APP2: 1937-1953 serials are eight digits, the first the assembly plant and the last seven a sequential number unique to the car. The year is not encoded, so identify the year from the number range (not provided by the page).
Example is a placeholder.
Pre-1954 Buick engine serials differ from the car serial (TB-APP2).

| 4 Basic production number | 001555 [TB-APP2] |
- Year letter I = 1962 is as printed on TB-APP2; GM commonly skipped I. Unconfirmed by a second source.
- Series meanings: some combined entries could not be assigned to specific years.
TB-APP2: nine characters; production numbers start at 001001 per plant for full-size cars 1954-63, and at 501001 for 1961-63 Special/Skylark.
Engine serial equals car serial from 1957 (TB-APP2); different before.

- TB-68 prints an example 444377H101555 whose year digit (7) does not match its 1968 page.
- RTRW-BUICK lists (68) as "4 door sedan" and (41) Sportwagon V6, (48) Sportwagon Custom; Team Buick uses 69 for 4-door sedan and has no 41. Team Buick preferred; 48 kept as unconfirmed.
- Series 60/62/64/66 labels for 1970-71 on TB-70/TB-71 look like carried-over names (e.g., "Wildcat Custom" 1970); treat as unconfirmed.
TB-65, TB-68: plate on left front door hinge pillar and stamped on the engine block; production numbers start at 100001. 1965-66 engine serial = last eight digits of the VIN (TB-APP2).

| 5 Assembly plant (position 7) | H: Flint, Michigan [BG76] |
| 6 Production number (six digits) | 100001 [BG76] |
- BG76 lists engine Y for both a 301 V8 4-barrel and a 455 V8; the 455 is unlikely in 1976 but the page prints it. Plant 2 (Ste. Therese, Canada) is the only digit plant besides 1980/1979 oddities and is left unconfirmed.
- Body-style descriptions on buickgod.com change wording from year to year for the same code (for example 57 and 87); the codes are what the page lists, the descriptions are shown as printed. The 1973-74 Team Buick pages in gm-other.json give 29/39/69 and 37/57/87 meanings for the body styles of the Colonnade years.
Example is built from the published code tables, not a real VIN.
Thirteen characters: division 4 (Buick), series, two-digit body style, engine, year, plant, six-digit production number. The source numbers the positions oddly (it skips position 8) but the lengths add up to 13.

- BG78 lists three codes (A, G, 3) for 231 V6 and two each (Y/W, U/H, L/R/X) for 301, 305 and 350 V8 without saying what separates them.
- Body-style descriptions on buickgod.com change wording from year to year for the same code (for example 57 and 87); the codes are what the page lists, the descriptions are shown as printed. The 1978 engine list (196/231 V6, 301 and 305 V8) is the first year code C means 196 rather than 231 in this source; in 1976-77 BG76 and BG77 list C as 231.

| 6 Production number (six digits) | 129365 [BG80] |
- The 1980 year character is the letter A here, as on 17-character VINs; mopar.json uses the digit 0 for 1980 trucks and cars. Buick 1980 uses A per both BG80 and TBF80.
- BG80 lists R and X both as 350 V8 without saying what separates them; Z (Fremont) appears twice on the page.
Example 4J47AAH129365 is a real 1980 Regal VIN decoded on a TurboBuick forum thread (TBF80; seen only in a search summary) as Regal 2-door, 231 V6 2-barrel, 1980, Flint; BG80 gives the same code meanings.
Thirteen characters: division 4 (Buick), series, two-digit body style, engine, year, plant, six-digit production number. The source numbers the positions oddly (it skips position 8) but the lengths add up to 13.

What a serial number cannot tell you
It identifies what the factory recorded in the number: typically the model year, assembly plant, series or body and production sequence, and in some years the engine. It cannot confirm a car is original or numbers-matching. Compare stampings, body tags and documentation.
