Where's my serial number?
- Late 1960s and later: usually on a small plate on the dashboard, visible through the windshield on the driver's side.
- Earlier cars: it varies by make and year. Common places are the driver's door pillar or hinge post, the steering column, the firewall, or near the glove box. Each make's page lists what our sources say.
- Paperwork: your title and registration also show it.
Example: 1FKC14341 (an example Chevrolet serial).
Years we cover
1946-1980.
What a Chevrolet serial looks like, by year
Each example below is split into numbered groups of characters, with what each group means. Example numbers show the layout; they are not a specific car.
1946-1952
Looks like 1FKC14341 (9 characters)
| 1 Assembly plant | 1: Flint, Michigan [OCMP_SERIAL] [GW_4650] [CTO_ADVDEC] |
| 2 Model year letter | F: 1948 [OCMP_SERIAL] [CTO_ADVDEC] |
| 3 Series | K: Fleetmaster and Fleetline (1946-48, series 2100); Deluxe series (1949-52) [GW_4650] [GW_MODELS] [CTO_ADVDEC] [VCCA_48] |
| 4 Month of assembly | C: March [OCMP_SERIAL] [CTO_ADVDEC] [VCCA_48] |
| 5 Sequence number at that plant (starts at 1001) | 14341 [OCMP_SERIAL] [GW_4650] [VCCA_48] |
- Series letters 1946-48: OCMP_SERIAL lists G (Stylemaster) and H (Fleetmaster) but its table was garbled in extraction; GW_4650, GW_MODELS, CTO_ADVDEC and the 1948 plate in VCCA_48 give J and K.
- Plant 20: Los Angeles (OCMP_SERIAL, CTO_ADVDEC, GW_COMM) versus Van Nuys (GW_MODELS).
- OCMP_SERIAL's letter L for Los Angeles is for body plates; the same site's cowl page (OCMP_COWL) lists L as Lansing, Michigan.
Layout: plant (1 or 2 digits), year letter, series letter, month letter, sequence number. The sequence number is not padded and starts at 1001 at each plant (OCMP_SERIAL, GW_4650).
Where the plate is: under the floor mat on the passenger side 1942-48 and on the driver's side front door pillar 1949-52 per OCMP_SERIAL. A VCCA forum poster cites a January 1946 Service News moving it to the right front door pillar from 1946; the posts conflict (VCCA_48).
Example 1FKC14341 is the 1948 Fleetline plate quoted in VCCA_48: Flint, 1948, series K, March, number 14341. A St. Louis 1948 Fleetmaster cabriolet in the same thread begins 3FKD.
The 1946 year letter D and its J/K series come from GW_4650 (46-DJ, 46-DK) and OCMP_SERIAL; no real 1946 plate was seen.
Light trucks of 1947-52 use the same layout with other series letters and have their own format.

Looks like 5GRB292 (7 characters)
| 1 Assembly plant | 5: Kansas City, Missouri [GW_SERIAL] [GW_COMM] [CTO_ADVDEC] [LMC_CA] |
| 2 Model year letter (light-duty trucks) | G: 1949 [GW_SERIAL] [CTO_ADVDEC] [LMC_CA] |
| 3 Series | R: 3600, three-quarter-ton, 125.25 in. wheelbase [GW_SERIAL] [CTO_ADVDEC] [LMC_CA] |

| 5 Production number at that plant (starts at 1001) | 292 [GW_SERIAL] [GW_COMM] [CTO_ADVDEC] |
- GW_SERIAL describes year code then series code then month code; CTO_ADVDEC describes a two-letter year+series symbol then month. Both give the same characters.
- Series T (3700) and U (3900) appear in CTO_ADVDEC and GW_COMM-style tables but not in GW_SERIAL (which calls its list partial) or LMC_CA; kept unconfirmed.
- Plant 12 Buffalo (LMC_CA only) and plant 20 Los Angeles versus Van Nuys (GW_MODELS).
Layout: plant (1 or 2 digits), year letter, series letter, month letter, production number. Light-duty trucks only. Heavy-duty trucks use year letters Q-V (1947-52) with series J, K, L, P, R, S, V, W, X and are not encoded here (GW_SERIAL, CTO_ADVDEC).
Example 5GRB292 is the printed example on the LMC Truck chart (LMC_CA): Kansas City, 1949, 3600, February. Its 3-digit number is as printed; other sources say numbering starts at 1001, so the pattern allows 3 to 6 digits.
Plate is on the left (driver's side) front body hinge pillar (GW_SERIAL).
The 1947 entries are the second-series 1947 trucks (CTO_ADVDEC). Earlier 1946-early 1947 trucks are not encoded.
1947-48 trucks may be marked Thriftmaster or Loadmaster instead of series numbers (GW_SERIAL).

Layout: series letter, two-digit model year, plant letter, six-digit sequence number. Series E (Corvette) is excluded.
Example C53L066805 is a 1953 Bel Air VIN shown in an auction listing (AUCTION_53, seen in a search result only); a second listing showed C53N085402 (Norwood).

- The oldcarmanualproject cowl-plate page lists L as Lansing, Michigan; both VIN decoders list Los Angeles.
- Sequence start for 1957: 100001 (Classic Industries) vs 10001 (second source, unfetched summary).
Passenger-car serial number (V8 layout, 11 characters). Classic Industries describes the order as engine prefix, series letter, two-digit year, plant letter, six-digit number; the exact positional order is inferred from the truck-side decoder which uses series, year, plant.
Sequence: Classic Industries says plants began at 001001 for 1955-56 and 100001 for 1957 (another source says 10001 for 1957). Oakland (O) can be confused with zero.

- Year digit for 1980: one 1973-80 source and Classic Industries give A; two search summaries mention 0 for 1980 trucks. Only A is accepted.
- Series N: Caprice per Classic Industries; Nova per an unreliable decoder. Nova is X per Ground Up SS396 (single source, unconfirmed).
13-character number: division 1, series letter, two-digit body, engine letter, year digit, plant letter, six-digit sequence. VIN plate is on the upper dash, visible through the windshield.
The engine letter is not unique: the same letter is reused for different engines in different years and lines. Always read it with the year and series. Single-source engine entries are marked unconfirmed.
Corvette (series Z) is excluded by the pattern. Chevette, Monza and Nova Custom series letters were not confirmed by our sources and are not mapped.
Sequence start varies by plant and line (for example Chevelle / Monte Carlo 400001, Camaro 100001); it is not encoded in the pattern.

- The 73-87.com engine table was garbled in extraction; code reuse across years (Q, U, M, Z) is therefore marked unconfirmed. A forum summary lists different codes (S/Q/D six; E V8; U 305; X 307; Y or L 350; U or R 400).
- A search summary says some sources give 0 for 1980 and a forum says GMC sequences start at 500001 versus 100001 for Chevrolet; not used.
- GMC (division T) uses the same layout per 73-87.com but GMC series numbers are 15/25/35; GMC is not covered by this format (pattern restricted to division C).
13-character 1973-80 Chevrolet light-truck number: division C, chassis C/K, engine letter, series, body, year, plant, six digits (73-87.com example CCL148Z100327 = 1978 C10, 350-4 V8, Fremont).
Blazer / Suburban / van body codes and the L (light-duty) chassis code appear in Junkyard Mob and Ground Up SS396 but disagree with each other, so only pickup (4) is mapped.
1980 uses year code A (73-87.com).

What a serial number cannot tell you
It identifies what the factory recorded in the number: typically the model year, assembly plant, series or body and production sequence, and in some years the engine. It cannot confirm a car is original or numbers-matching. Compare stampings, body tags and documentation.
