Where's my serial number?
- Late 1960s and later: usually on a small plate on the dashboard, visible through the windshield on the driver's side.
- Earlier cars: it varies by make and year. Common places are the driver's door pillar or hinge post, the steering column, the firewall, or near the glove box. Each make's page lists what our sources say.
- Paperwork: your title and registration also show it.
Example: 83900001 (an example Dodge serial).
Years we cover
1946-1980.

- TWN_HT says the 1960 starting frame numbers are unclear; the range 100001 upward is our reading of its examples and T137.
- This format is digits only, and many makers used plain numeric serials in these years. A match here does not by itself show the car is this make; check the make on the car and its paperwork.
UNCONFIRMED layout: TWN_HT gives the 1960 frame/VIN examples 1160119594 (P6-D100), 2160119263, 1180119354 and 2180119481, and says the true starting numbers are unclear (its list is "numbers higher than known frame numbers"). T137 lists the 1960 WM300 start as 2460-100001. The 1960 half-ton parts-availability numbers are different (06D1-L100001) and are not VIN.

| 4 Sequence number (1961 range 100,000 to 159,999) | 100000 [TWN_HT] |
- VMT gives no per-year sequence ranges for 1961-69; the year boundaries here come from TWN_HT and T137 start numbers and assume numbers are issued in one continuous sequence across truck lines at plant 1. That assumption is not stated by any source.
- Plants 2, 6 and 7 are not covered because no source says whether they used the same sequence.
- This format is digits only, and many makers used plain numeric serials in these years. A match here does not by itself show the car is this make; check the make on the car and its paperwork.
Ten-character Dodge truck number: two-digit model code, cylinders (6 or 8), plant digit, six-digit sequence (VMT). The half-ton starting numbers in TWN_HT (for example 1181460747 = D100 V8 2WD, 1965) read as the model code 11, 6/8, plant 1 and sequence.
Year is inferred from the sequence range, not from a year character; the ranges were all published as starts only, and the same start numbers appear in two independent tables (TWN_HT and T137) for 1962-1966.
Model codes not listed in VMT are rejected.

| 2 Engine | 6: Six-cylinder [VMT] [TWN_HT] |
| 3 Assembly plant | 1: Warren Truck Plant, Warren, Michigan [VMT] |
| 4 Sequence number (1964 range 315,000 to 429,999) | 315000 [TWN_HT] |

| 4 Sequence number (1967 range 668,000 to 779,999) | 668000 [T137] |

- VMT lists L6 as both CNT-900 and L-600. Year digit 0 can be 1970 or 1980; VMT decodes it as 1970 only because it covers no 1980 truck table.
- Single source (a vintage military truck site). No second source for the model-code, engine or plant tables was reachable (sweptlinetruck.com and rubbertherightway.com did not deliver truck tables).
13-character Dodge truck number (VMT): two-character model code, body style, weight class, engine, year, plant, six-digit sequence. VMT's own example is A11AA0J000001 (A-100, conventional cab, GVW A, engine A, 1970, Canadian built).
Engine codes are the names printed in VMT (it gives no displacement figures for many); they are shown as printed.
Car formats in mopar.json use a letter in position 2; these truck codes have a digit or letter there too, so check the model code against the table.

| 6 Assembly plant (position 7) | S: Warren Truck #1 (includes compacts) [VMT] |
| 7 Sequence number (positions 8-13) | 500001 [VMT] |
- VMT lists engine H as Cummins N-927 in 1972 and Cummins Super 250 in 1973. Another decoder (search summary) lists plant letters for passenger-car VINs as B Hamtramck and A Warren, which do not apply to this truck table.
- Single source for the tables.
Same 13-character layout as 1970-71 (VMT). The pickup example D14BE2S500001 uses the codes in VMT (D1 D-100, body 4 Sweptline, GVW B, engine E LA 318-1, 1972, plant S Warren #1) and is built from the tables, not a real VIN.
A forum summary of a real 1976 D100 VIN (not encoded) reads plant S as Warren Truck No. 1, consistent with VMT.

- Engine letter meanings for 1978-79 conflict with the table (above). Year digit 9 (1979) has no source. 1978-79 plant letters are the 1974-77 list as VMT states.
Real 1978 example (HAG78): D14BH8S314512 = D1 pickup, body 4 (Sweptline), GVW B, engine H, 1978, plant S (Warren #1). VMT says its 1978-79 body, weight class, engine and plant tables match 1974-77 but shows no 1978 or 1979 year digit; 8 is confirmed only by the HAG78 example, and 9 is unconfirmed.

What a serial number cannot tell you
It identifies what the factory recorded in the number: typically the model year, assembly plant, series or body and production sequence, and in some years the engine. It cannot confirm a car is original or numbers-matching. Compare stampings, body tags and documentation.
