GMC VIN decoder, 1946-1972

Classic GMC serial numbers use the maker's own format, which standard decoders cannot read. Ours reads each published format and shows the source for every rule, including where references disagree.

Type it exactly as stamped, with no spaces or dashes. We do not keep the numbers you enter.

Where's my serial number?

Example: FC10166730 (an example GMC serial).

Years we cover

1946-1972.

What a GMC serial looks like, by year

Each example below is split into numbered groups of characters, with what each group means. Example numbers show the layout; they are not a specific car.

1946-1950

Looks like FC10166730 (10 characters)

1 Model year letterF: 1947-1950 (the letter does not separate the years; production-number ranges do) [LMC_CA] [OGT_SERIAL] [HAGERTY_FC101]
2 Cab styleC: Conventional cab [LMC_CA] [OGT_SERIAL] [HAGERTY_FC101]
3 Chassis rating10: Half-ton (100 series) [LMC_CA] [OGT_SERIAL] [HAGERTY_FC101]
4 Wheelbase1: 116 in. [LMC_CA] [OGT_SERIAL] [HAGERTY_FC101]
5 Production number (LMC_CA's table places ranges in model years)66730 [LMC_CA] [OGT_SERIAL]
Where sources disagree
  • Letter E: OGT_SERIAL says 1946; a forum plate EC102 was listed as 1947 by one reference book (VCCA thread, read only as a summary).

Layout: year letter, C for conventional cab, two-digit chassis rating, one-digit wheelbase code, production number. LMC_CA prints a table mapping production-number ranges to the 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1950 model years for half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks; those ranges are not encoded here because the printed layout of the table is ambiguous.

Example FC10166730 is the stated chassis number of a 1950 GMC FC 101 listing (HAGERTY_FC101). LMC_CA's printed example is FC15225889.

Rating 25 and wheelbase 3 come only from OGT_SERIAL and are unconfirmed; the half-ton 116 in. FC101 is confirmed by three sources.

GMC trucks of this period were not necessarily model-yeared like Chevrolets: a 1946 plate may be a truck built in early 1947 (VCCA thread, search summary).

A VCCA thread quotes a plate EC102 that a reference book lists as 1947; OGT_SERIAL gives E as 1946.

2 Wheelbase2: 125.25 in. [LMC_CA] [OGT_SERIAL]
3 Engine22: 228 cu in. in-line six [LMC_CA] [OGT_SERIAL]
4 Assembly plant (1952-53 only per LMC_CA)C: Oakland, California [LMC_CA] [OGT_SERIAL]
5 Production number5254 [LMC_CA] [OGT_SERIAL]
Where sources disagree
  • OGT_SERIAL's worked 1951 example (10222P2537) shows a plant letter, while LMC_CA says 1951 models had no plant code. The pattern allows both.
  • OGT_SERIAL lists a one-ton 25 series and wheelbase digit 3 for 1951-53; LMC_CA shows only 10/15 and wheelbase 1/2. Not encoded.

Layout: optional M, chassis rating, wheelbase digit, two-digit engine code, plant letter (1952-53), production number. No model-year letter is used; LMC_CA's table of production-number ranges by plant separates 1952 from 1953 (for example half-ton Pontiac 28736-49332 for 1952 and 49333 and up for 1953).

Example 15222C5254 is built from a forum-quoted 1953 plate read as series 150, engine 22, Oakland, number 5254 (search summary only).

LMC_CA says the plant letter is on 1952-55 models only and 1951 models carry none.

7 Production number3135 [LMC_CA]
Where sources disagree
  • Z: LMC_CA says 1954-55 first series; OGT_SERIAL says Z is 1954 and Y is 1955. OGT_SERIAL also says 1954 serials were numbers followed by a letter, which does not match the LMC layout.

Layout is that of 1951-53 plus the model-year letter Z after the plant letter. The example is the LMC chart's printed example (LMC_CA).

5 Model year letterT: 1957 [LMC_CA] [OGT_SERIAL]
6 Production number5935 [LMC_CA]
Where sources disagree
  • A forum summary (not fetched) reads a 1956 half-ton as 101 PX1234, with no engine digit; consistent with this pattern for a six.

Layout: chassis rating, wheelbase digit, optional 8 for V8, plant letter, model-year letter, production number. The example is the LMC chart's printed example (LMC_CA): three-quarter-ton, 123.25 in., V8, Pontiac, 1957.

S covers both 1958 and 1959; the year check uses 1958 for S.

Where sources disagree
  • Position dispute (resolved by the sources, recorded for the record): the GloveBox Options recap prints some examples as plant-then-serial-then-letter (for example CM2590DPC1001A and CM20DPB10001) and elsewhere puts year first; its main examples (CM2590DPC1001B, CM20DFB50001, CM20DBA50001, CS134-FZ50001, CE134-Z150001) and the LMC chart agree that for 1967-71 GMC the plant letter comes first and the model-year character second. This is the opposite of 1967-72 Chevrolet, where the year digit comes before the plant letter.
  • GBO1 prints the trailing letter as B in one place and A in its recap; the LMC chart does not mention it. It is accepted as optional and left unconfirmed.
  • The 1967 format rests on a single worked example (GBO1) plus the generic LMC layout.

Example CM2590DPC1001 is the GBO1 1967 example CM2590DPC1001B without its last letter. LMC_CB says 1967 begins with serial 1001 and gives year codes C=1967, B=1968, A=1969, Z=1970, 1=1971 for GMC.

  • Serial start: LMC_CB says 1968 and 1969 begin at 10001; the main GBO1 examples use 50001 (its recap uses 10001). The pattern accepts any five- or six-digit sequence.
  • Jimmy code 14 appears in the LMC list for 1967-71; its 1968-69 use is not shown in an example.

GBO1 examples: 1968 CM20DFB50001 (plant F, year B) and 1969 CM20DBA50001 (plant B, year A). LMC_CB year codes B=1968, A=1969.

  • GBO1 writes one 1970 example as CS134-ZZ50001 and a recap as CE134ZZ54321, which agree with plant-then-year (plant Z, year Z).
  • Plant "Z" and year "Z"/"1" collide with plant codes, so a letter-only string can be read two ways; the pattern fixes the order as plant then year.

Written CS134-FZ50001 on the plate; the dash is removed before matching. LMC_CB worked example CE134-S113045 = plant S (St. Louis), 1971, the 3,045th truck. GBO1: CS134-FZ50001 (1970, plant F) and CE134-Z150001 (1971, plant Z).

The model-type value 04/34 is 1970-71 only; LMC_CB lists the Suburban codes 06 and 16 as 1970-72.

Where sources disagree
  • GBO1 also prints TCS142Z500001 and a recap TCS142F123456, so its plant letter and serial vary; both fit this pattern.

The first character T is the GMC manufacturer letter (LMC_CB). LMC_CB worked example TCS142S500121 (plant S, the 121st truck); GBO1 TCS142F500001; GBO2 gives the Canadian example TCS1421500001 (plant 1, Oshawa).

Unlike 1967-71 GMC, the 1972 year digit comes before the plant letter (LMC_CB, GBO1).

What a serial number cannot tell you

It identifies what the factory recorded in the number: typically the model year, assembly plant, series or body and production sequence, and in some years the engine. It cannot confirm a car is original or numbers-matching. Compare stampings, body tags and documentation.
