Looks like 78A1001 (7 characters)

The model year is not encoded in the number; it is told from the production number range for the series and plant. YANK-O4660 lists Lansing (no letter) starting numbers: series 78 began 33001 (1946), 50001 (1947), 72001 (1948); series 98 began 32001, 43001, 65001; series 66 began 112001, 132001, 165001; series 76 began 920001 (as printed, likely a typo), 134001, 164001. A 1947 listing gives the Lansing 78 range as 50001 to 70212 (LIST-OLDS47). Atlanta (A) cars start at 1001 (1947) and 2001 (1948) per the same table. Several rows in the table are garbled in the source, so the ranges are not used to assign a year.

The Lansing form has no plant letter: the 1947 listing reads 78-59651 (LIST-OLDS47).

Engine numbers are separate from the serial; YANK-O4660 gives 6-cylinder 6-1001 to 6-82337 and 8-cylinder 8-1001 to 8-36397 for 1946 (no relationship to plant).

The 48-3607D style cowl tag seen in forums is a body tag (year, series digit, body), not this serial.

CDEC-O50 gives the 9-character layout (year 2, series 1, plant 1, production number 5) and the 1950 example 509M37360 (Series 98 per series list; the decoder page itself does not decode the series or plant).

Looks like 589M19530 (9 characters)

CLASSY-O57 (GM service manual text, 1957): plate on left front door pillar; first two digits year, third digit series (7 = 88, 8 = Super 88, 9 = 98), then plant letter (M Lansing, A Atlanta given as examples).

The 1958 example 589M19530 comes from a classicoldsmobile.com forum thread seen in search results only (page not fetched).

Plate on left front door hinge pillar (full size) or left windshield pillar (F-85) per OLDS62.

Plant letter matches the Fisher Body plant code on the body plate (OLDS62).

Higher numbers are not always later builds (OLDS62).

F-85 was built only at Lansing, South Gate and Kansas City in 1962 (OLDS62).
