Where's my serial number?
- Late 1960s and later: usually on a small plate on the dashboard, visible through the windshield on the driver's side.
- Earlier cars: it varies by make and year. Common places are the driver's door pillar or hinge post, the steering column, the firewall, or near the glove box. Each make's page lists what our sources say.
- Paperwork: your title and registration also show it.
Example: C6MB3629 (an example Pontiac serial).
Years we cover
1946-1958, 1960-1980. Not covered yet: 1959.
What a Pontiac serial looks like, by year
Each example below is split into numbered groups of characters, with what each group means. Example numbers show the layout; they are not a specific car.
1946-1948
Looks like C6MB3629 (8 characters)
| 1 Assembly plant | C: South Gate, California [JJ-PONT] |
| 2 Cylinders | 6: Six-cylinder [JJ-1947] [JJ-PONT] |
| 3 Model year | M: 1947 [JJ-1947] |
| 4 Body-style letter | B: Streamliner [JJ-1947] [LIST-PONT46] |
| 5 Sequence number (commencing at 1001 at each plant) | 3629 [JJ-1947] |
- Plant letters for 1946-48 are documented in the sources only for P, C and L (the pre-war list). Other plants used by Pontiac in 1954-58 (A, F, K, T, W) are not confirmed for 1946-48.
The letter in position 4 is a body-style letter in this era (B = Streamliner in the sources); only B is confirmed, other letters are shown as not listed.
Sources describe the number as a frame/engine serial; the engine number equals the serial number from 1942 (JJ-PONT, forum statement). Location of the serial tag is disputed among posters (firewall, cowl, frame) so none is stated here.
Source quality: forum posts and auction listings only. No factory or club table was reachable.

| 4 Transmission | H: Hydra-Matic [JJ-PONT] [LIST-PONT53] [PREG-2092] |
| 5 Sequence number (commencing at 1001 at each plant per transmission) | 80863 [PREG-2092] [PSAFARI] |
- PREG-2092 says there was no H (Hydra-Matic) code in 1949 listings; JJ-PONT gives P8RH as a pattern for 1949. Unresolved.
- A listing shows P8VH109328 for a 1949-54 Chieftain: V is not a year letter our sources list, so this number would show "not a code our sources list" / not match.
- Year letters for 1953 (X) and 1954 (Z) come from one listing and one forum example respectively; no club table was reachable.
Engine number equals the serial number (JJ-PONT, forum statement for 1942 on).
A Pontiac Registry thread cites the C8TH series (South Gate, eight-cylinder Hydra-Matic) as running from 1001 to 29,630 for the 1949-50 run (PREG-2092).
Plant letters are the 1954-58 list from PSAFARI; the sources used for 1949-53 show only P, C and A in examples.

Looks like W756H15431 (10 characters)
| 1 Assembly plant | W: Wilmington, Delaware [PSAFARI] |
| 2 Series digit | 7: 27 series (122-inch wheelbase: all Chieftains, 1957 Super Chiefs, Safaris) [PSAFARI] |
| 3 Model year | 56: 1956 [PSAFARI] |
| 4 Transmission | H: Hydra-Matic [PSAFARI] |
| 5 Sequence number | 15431 [PSAFARI] |
- A 1954 Star Chief listing quoted in search results shows a different-looking number (P62A38929) and another (P8ZH45771). Neither was fetched or confirmed, so 1954 and 1958 are not covered by this format.
Serial tag is spot-welded to the driver door jamb, hinge side; the number is also stamped on the front right side of the engine block (PSAFARI).
Each assembly plant numbers cars separately per transmission type, starting at 1001 (PSAFARI).
The pattern allows 4 to 6 sequence digits because the source gives a 5-digit example and no maximum.
Plant letters are listed by the source for 1954-1958; the structure itself is documented by the source for 1955-57 only.

| 3 Model year | 58: 1958 [PSAFARI] [LIST-PONT58] |
| 4 Transmission letter (1955-57 meaning: H = Hydra-Matic, S = standard) | H: Hydra-Matic (by analogy with 1955-57; not confirmed for 1958) unconfirmed [PSAFARI] [LIST-PONT58] |
| 5 Sequence number | 1045 [PSAFARI] |
- Whether the 1958 layout is identical to 1955-57 is not stated by any source reached.
Plant letters: PSAFARI lists them for 1954-58 and says the first character of the number identifies the plant up through 1958.
No table of 1958 series digits or the transmission letter was found. The layout is taken from the 1955-57 scheme and from 1958 Bonneville auction listings (P558H1045, K558H1522, W558H2385, C558H3252); some listings show a digit in position 4 (C55841312), probably transcription errors, so that position is accepted as any letter or digit.

| 4 Production number (listed to start at 1001) | 1001 [TPOCR-P6061] |
- Plant letter A: TPOCR gives Arlington, Texas; PSAFARI lists A as Atlanta and T as Arlington for 1954-58. TPOCR is the only source for 1960-63 letters; Doraville (D) first used in 1960 is consistent with PSAFARI-PLANTS.
The number is on a plate attached to the left front door hinge pillar (TPOCR for 1961-63) and, for 1961 full-size cars, on a triangle pad on the front of the right engine bank (a 1961 shop manual summary seen in search results).
Sequence length varies in the sources (4 digits in the 1960 and 1962 tables, 6 in 1961 and 1963); real examples show 4 to 6 digits, so 4 to 6 digits are accepted. Example sequence is a placeholder.

- Plant V: RTRW-PONT says Bloomfield, IL; the Team Buick pages say Bloomfield, MI. A Bloomfield, Michigan plant is the one the other pages imply. Unresolved.
- CCHK assigns series 24 to both Grand Prix and Firebird Formula; not used.
- Firebird 1967-71: RTRW-PONT lists letters/digits in positions 2-3 (S,T,U,V; 3,4,6,8) and an 8-to-12-digit sequence that does not make 13 characters; TPTAP says 1970-71 Trans Am uses 28 in positions 1-2. Left out as a gap.
TEUFERT says sequence numbers start at 600001 at all plants except V8 models, which start at 100001.
Engine is not encoded in the VIN for 1965-71 (CCHK says so; TEUFERT and RTRW-PONT give no engine code for these years).
Only the Tempest/LeMans/GTO series (33, 35, 37, 39, 42) are corroborated by two sources. Catalina 52 and Bonneville 56 are single-source. Executive, Star Chief, Grand Prix, Safari and Firebird series codes were not confirmed and are deliberately excluded; those VINs will not match this format.

Covers the Tempest/LeMans/GTO/Ventura intermediate line only. Full-size (Catalina, Bonneville, Grand Prix) and compact lines for 1972-74 are a gap.
Position 5 is the engine code from 1972 (RTRW-PONT, TEUFERT).
Example sequence is a placeholder.

| 6 Sequence number | 500001 [TPTAP] |
- Engine letters X, W, Y, R disagree between RTRW-PONT (455 or 400) and TPTAP (350 or 301). Year ranges in RTRW-PONT reconcile some, not all.
- TPTAP lists X twice in its engine table, once with L and R and once alone, all as 350.
- Year 1980: both sources use letter A; CCHK claims 0. A is used here.
TPTAP: sequence numbers start at 500001 in 1972, 1975 and 1976, and at 100001 in other years.
Engine letters are year-dependent. Letters listed as unconfirmed rest on the RTRW-PONT list alone, which is itself internally inconsistent.

What a serial number cannot tell you
It identifies what the factory recorded in the number: typically the model year, assembly plant, series or body and production sequence, and in some years the engine. It cannot confirm a car is original or numbers-matching. Compare stampings, body tags and documentation.
